Sheryl Campbell
PHOTOGRAPHER
Cherryblond
Cherryblond is Sheryl Campbell’s second photobook and is a contemporary work of fiction, based partly on fact. With 262 pages encapsulating thirteen years of modern dating, this photobook is a visual journey through Sheryl’s own poignant narrative of love, loss, and self-discovery in the digital age. Her artistic vision blurs the lines between fact and fiction. By casting a model to represent herself, and male friends to stand in for prospective partners, and photographing them in a range of intimate cafes to bustling bars, each setting tells a story of connection and disconnection. The use of text messages and Valentine’s cards takes the photobook into graphic novel territory.
Droplet
My first photobook titled 'droplet' is provocative, and raised a necessary conversation in NZ about sexual harassment in the corporate environment. In 2018 several students, on internships at a top law firm, reported having been sexually assaulted by senior partners. As a former commercial photographer, I had spent many hours photographing in corporate and law offices. I was in shock disbelief that some lawyers thought they could behave this way, and suffer no consequences. I aimed to create imagery that could break down these appalling acts to their simplest parts. Droplet examines these behaviours in a conceptual way, with the aim of cleaning it up, and ultimately provides a subsequent counter response.
